How to install mods on your Minecraft server

Search Modrinth and CurseForge from your panel and install mods in one click. Learn which mod loader you need and how friends install the same mods.

On RexifyHosting you don't download or upload mod files yourself. The Mods page in your panel searches Modrinth and CurseForge, picks the right version for your server and installs any required mods with it.

1. Make sure your server can run mods

Mods need a mod loader. Paper and Vanilla servers can't load mods.

  1. Open your server in the panel and go to Versions.
  2. Check what it runs under Currently running.
  3. If it says Paper or Vanilla, choose Fabric, Forge or NeoForge and the Minecraft version you want, then click Install.

Mods are made for one loader. A Fabric mod won't run on Forge, so pick the loader your favourite mods support. On a mod's page, Modrinth and CurseForge list the loaders it works with.

Changing the server software reinstalls the server. Make a backup first, and leave Wipe server files off to keep your world.

2. Find and install a mod

  1. Open Mods in the panel's sidebar.
  2. Search for a mod, for example "Sodium" or "Create".
  3. Switch between Modrinth and CurseForge if you can't find it in one.
  4. Click the mod to see details, then click Install.

Only versions that match your server's Minecraft version and loader are shown, so you can't install a wrong one by mistake.

3. Restart the server

After installing, a bar appears: "Your mods changed. Restart the server to load them." Click Restart now. Mods only load when the server starts.

4. Your friends need the mods too

Most mods change the game on both sides, so every player needs the same mods and loader version on their own PC. The easiest way:

  1. Install the Modrinth App or the CurseForge app.
  2. Create a profile with the same Minecraft version and loader as your server.
  3. Add the same mods to that profile, and play from it.

Some mods are server-only (for example many performance or backup mods). Friends don't need those. The mod page says whether it is needed on the client, the server or both.

Update or remove mods

The Installed tab on the Mods page lists every mod on your server. From there you can update a mod to the newest matching version or remove it. Restart the server after changes.

If the server won't start after adding a mod

  • Open the Console and look for a red error that names a mod.
  • Remove the last mod you added from the Installed tab and restart.
  • Missing dependency errors usually mean the mod needs another mod, like Fabric API. Search for it and install it.

The AI assistant can also read the error with you: ask "my server crashes after I added a mod".
